Pierre Snyman

Director

Pierre Snyman was born in George in the heart of the Garden Route on 12 February 1973. He matriculated at Outeniqua Academic High School in 1990 in George before joining the Department of Correctional Services (DCS). He completed his training in 1991 and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 1993. The DCS demilitarised in 1996 and Pierre was promoted to Correctional Officer I in the same year.

He referred an unfair labour practise for arbitration in 2004 and after a long Labour Court review, the DCS was instructed by the Court to promote him to Senior Correctional Officer (Captain) backdated to 2004, which is also his current rank. This court case has since been used in numerous PSA promotion disputes as case law to the advantage of PSmembers.

Pierre completed post-matric promotional subjects in the Diploma DCS Management at Unisa in 2001. He gained experience in Finance, Logistics and Social Reintegration and is currently the most-experience representative in the roving Parole Board, Southern Cape.

The PSA was introduced to the DCS in 1994, prompting Pierre to join. He immediately got involved in PSA structures. In 1994 he embarked on a go-slow for nine months forcing the DCS to recognise his rights to participate in union activities. The same year, Pierre was elected as PSA Vice-Chairperson in Mossel Bay. He was also representative to the meeting where the first PSA Provincial Structure was established in 1994.

He was the Regional PSA Chairperson for DCS from 1995 to 1999 and also a member of the previous PSA Regional Branch Southern Cape. Since then he was the Provincial Chairperson of PSA DCS Branch and from 2005, Chairperson of DCS National Branch. In 2009 he was re-elected as National Chairperson. Pierre acts as negotiator in the Bargaining Chamber and represents more than 10 500 members in the National Chamber, one of the largest PSA Branches represented in a Departmental Chamber.
